The title Shihan means "one who models excellence" and was bestowed on a senior Black Belt Instructor who had demonstrated proficiency (excellence) in their chosen Art or craft.

These master instructors adopted a lifestyle of learning, and an understanding the next generation of students would only rise to the level of proficiency at which they were taught. Therefore, Shihans continue to become a better version of themselves daily to continue to model excellence before their students.

Leadership is no different. What you model before will be the example they will embrace, because people do what people see. You as a leader cannot give to others what you do not possess. You cannot ask of your followers what you're not willing to ask of yourself. So to master leadership, you have to become a lifelong student. You have to pursue excellence as a way of life.
